Thankful Things Thursday

I am totally stealing this from the running blogger that got me into blogging, Miss Ali, the coolest chick around.  It’s kind of in honor of her awesome week.  If you don’t stalk follow Ali like I do, you should start.  She’s awesome.

1. The first day of spring and the springlike temps that accompanied it.  – I woke up this morning with my 5am “Are you going to run or sleep?” alarm, saw it was above 40º and hightailed it out the door like a bat out of hell.  I smiled and waved at every man, woman, child, and dog that was anywhere near me and most of them smiled back.  The Philly thaw has begun, people!

2. This is directly linked to #1….NEW RUNNING SNEAKERS!  I mentioned before that Running Warehouse had my beloved Asics Kayanos on super sale and they came in really quickly (another plus!).  I couldn’t wait to take them for their first spin this morning.  I also got to wear my hot pink pants which are now reserved for working out in the dark because of an unfortunate incident that sounds like “amp swass.”

3. Iced coffee beverages. I love them.  I can’t get enough of them.  I’m going to be able to keep my Starbucks Gold Card status for another year due to my purchases of iced coffee alone.

4. Flywheel.  I wrote about this magical land awhile ago, and I’m finally treating myself to another class.  Happy hour for the fitness crowd.  Lindsay is gonna be so jealous.

5. Fortune Cookies.  I ordered Chinese last night and my fortune was written by Captain Obvious. Tell me something I don’t know, Fortune Cookie Man.


I’m heading to Unite later for my first two-a-day in a very, very long while.  Keep your fingers crossed that my legs don’t declare mutiny and walk away on their own.

To workout? Or not to workout?

We’re on day 5 of a cold here, and let me tell you…it’s NOT attractive.  I am probably the least attractive sick person ever.

I felt ok on Monday, so I pushed through a class at Unite.  I rowed instead of ran (I’ve been doing this a lot lately anyway, but I felt like it would be easier on me) and my weights definitely weren’t great.  Tuesday morning rolled around and I felt absolutely miserable.  After some hemming and hawing, I decided to cancel on my favorite night of the week….Anne Marie’s Tuesday awesomeness.  I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle the ass-kicking that she puts us through.  I went home, curled up, and went to bed at 9:30.  And I felt a little guilty.

Is that normal to feel guilty for not going to the gym when you’re sick?  And how do you know if you should workout or stay home?

I can’t wait to tackle the gym extra hard tomorrow…I’m feeling a million times better AND my new running sneakers came in.  Watch out, world….shit is gettin REAL.

Food Prep!

I did it!  I actually prepped food for the week and tried a new recipe!


I feel so accomplished today.

I saw a recipe posted on A Cup of Jo last week for baked blueberry oatmeal and it looked amazingggggggg, so I figured I have to try it.

Look at Jo’s blog if you want an appetizing image. My food photog skills definitely need work.

Verdict: it IS amazing.  I tweaked it a little to make it more Weight Watchers friendly (used almonds instead of pecans, didn’t add the maple syrup) and it came out to about 8 points per serving (the recipe made 6 for me).  I portioned it out into tupperware containers so I have an easy grab and go breakfast for the week.

I also took some time to make zucchini marinara.  I put diced tomatoes, onions, spinach, and zucchini into a pot and let it simmer for a little while, adding some garlic and some parsley.  It’s perfect to use on pasta, but sometimes I put it on eggs if I want a breakfast for dinner meal.


I did all of that while watching Breaking Bad, so needless to say…it was an excellent end to an excellent weekend.

Five Favorite Things on Friday

1. – I just scored two pairs of my favorite sneakers (the Asics Kayanos) for the price of one!  They were on super sale due to being an older model (who cares what model, right?!) and then I found a coupon code on  I’m so pumped!  I bought two because I like to rotate my shoes while marathon training and a recent study backed me up on that!

4. My bridesmaids dress for my friend Jess’s wedding. – It’s beautiful!  And it looks great on all of us.  We felt very “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” when we tried it on….so many different body types, but a universally flattering style!

Can’t wait to celebrate with these idiots.

5. The fact that it’s Friday. – Has anyone else thought this was the longest week known to man?

I miss my purple Umbros.

The first gym I ever belonged to was the West Shore YMCA.  They’ve done several renovations over the years, so it’s a little fancier than when I was a regular, but I lovedddddd that place.  I took gymnastics lessons there when I was younger, had swim practice there in high school, and got a summer membership so I could go after my freshmen year in college.  Elliptical, weights, a little bit of running…all done in whatever ratty tshirt was clean and Umbro shorts (I liked my purple ones the best, but the red ones were cool, too).

I bet 99% of 20-somethings owned at least one pair of these.

I miss those days of $20 shiny shorts that most definitely gave you swamp ass if you were working out hard enough.

Now it’s the days of $90 yoga pants and $70 tank tops.  And I’m not pointing fingers….I buy into that too.  I have a shopping addiction in general, but the most dangerous store for me to be let loose in is Dicks.  I can’t even begin to explain the damage that I can do to my wallet if I’m left to my own devices.  There are very few things I’d rather spend my money on than a fancy new pair of running capris and a cute (but not matchy-matchy) top.

Since Lululemon is practically taking over the world, I feel a kind of pressure lately to look cute at the gym…and I don’t mean just clean and not too smelly, but actually attractive.  I could count on one hand the amount of girls in my usual class who don’t wear something completely over priced, yet totally adorable.

I recently saw an article on about the girl we love to hate, Miss Kimmy Kardashian, and her gym style, which includes a full face of makeup.  Instead of thinking some unkind thoughts about her like I normally would, I thought “Girl, I get where you’re coming from!”  It’s bad enough being a normal girl going to the gym and feeling like you have to put yourself together.  I couldn’t imagine being hounded by the paps while I’m just trying to get my sweat on.

Where did this insanity even come from?  What happened to rolling out of bed and just showing up in whatever you found that was clean, matching or not?

The Hanson Method -or- How To Torture Someone, Legally.

I am pretty sure our mail lady thought that Ryan Gosling himself was in the box she dropped off this morning.  My face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning, not like a girl in her late 20s who is about to torture herself for the third time just so she can pay someone $100 to allow her to run 26.2 hilly miles.  Who was the first person to charge for a race?  Do you think they thought “I can’t believe these idiots are paying me…”?

The Hanson Method is a training plan developed by Luke Humphrey, Keith Hanson, and Kevin Hanson.  It is based around running lower mileage runs more frequently and emphasizes the quality of the miles over the quantity.  It’s used by the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, which is now one of the nation’s most successful running groups and home to awesome women marathoners like Des Davila.  Like I mentioned before, I was drawn to this plan thanks to my friends Rachel and Lauren, who both have had success with it.

Looking at the plan itself is a tad overwhelming.  While the dreaded two-zero number is nowhere to be found, there are several 8 milers on Saturdays followed by 15 milers on Sundays….wtf.  I’m going to be spending quality time with a book, ice packs, and my foam rollers.  I’m excited to challenge myself and use something a bit more in depth than the Marathon Rookie program I’ve used previously.  I still HIGHLY recommend that program for anyone who wants to run their first marathon.  It’s so user friendly.

I can’t wait to read the book and start training.  Well, I can kinda wait to start training…I’m in that “exscareded” phase where sometimes I’m like “LET’S DO IT!” and other times I want to cry and eat ice cream.

When I start to get the hankering for ice cream and sorrows, I watch this.

Now I’m ready to beat the Soviets run a marathon.

I’m interested to see how this program will work for someone like me, who is more like the tortoise than the hare but has a lot of drive and knows she can cover the distance.  Fingers crossed!

Monday Musings

Since I’ve neglected sharing things that my mom you guys care about, I’ve decided to sum everything up in one post called “Monday Musings” because I’m original and fun and that title has never been used before.

1. Lent started last Wednesday and I decided to give up dairy.  Yes, I’m still alive…apparently you can’t die from lack of nachos.  I was shocked, too.  Since I’m already an almond milk devotee, the biggest issue for me is cheese and the random things you don’t really think of, like butter.  I can’t go to Dunkin for my morning coffee because they don’t have any non-dairy creamer, so that’s been weird, too.  I keep a thing of almond milk in my work fridge and I’m trying out different non-dairy alternatives, like almond milk yogurt and almond cheese.  I’m trying to avoid soy as much as possible due to the issues that it can cause, but I’m planning on doing a review of all of these things in a later post.  Spoiler alert: I’m going to be buying a not almond milk type of cheese next time.

2. I’m running the 2014 Baltimore Marathon!  The fact that everyone is responding with “Oh, isn’t that really hilly?” is terrifying, but I’m also excited. At the recommendation of two friends who I consider “professional” runners (Lauren and Rachel, I love you) I’m going to use the Hanson method for this race!  You run lower mileages more frequently, mimicking the tired legs that you’ll have when running in the race itself.  If it’s good enough for Des, it’s good enough for me.  Since we’re on the same level and everything.

3. I watched the entirety of True Detective in 24 hours, which enabled me to catch up with the rest of the free world fast enough to enjoy the finale in real time.  Let me just say….WTF.  I stopped breathing several times and forced Marty to cuddle with me because I was scared of being alone.  Obviously Marty could protect me since he’s a whopping like 7lbs or however much cats weigh.  Sidenote: I find Woody Harrelson strangely attractive and it makes me uncomfortable.
